The only caveat is that if they want to actually see or touch each other, they have to first get engaged, without leaving their respective pods.
It is, to be fair, a bonkers premise. Only the first two and a half of the 10 total episodes take place inside the facility.

Netflix’s new dating show has a unique premise — singles meet and get engaged without ever seeing each other face-to-face — but it’s also uniquely depressing. After 10 days, they have a choice: Get engaged, or get the hell out of Dodge. For the first handful of episodes, Love Is Blind does feel like something relatively new. And because none of the participants are actually blind, one woman must deal with the fact that she is low-key repulsed by the man she agreed to marry.

Dating apps propose a stressful juxtaposition: easy access to an abundance of potential partners but exponential effort without guaranteed results.
It varies, of course, but dating app fatigue has washed over many of us. When your soulmate is yet to present themselves — even when you’ve made yourself digitally available to the world or at least, to anyone in an 8km radius — it’s hard to feel optimistic about them being out there at all. No matter how committed you are to the cause, the thrill of swiping left on Too Short, Ugly Shirt and Boring Bio eventually wears off.
Hopeless and exhausted, to what lengths are we, the perpetually single, willing to go in search of the ‘happily ever after’ we crave? Just look around you. You can follow the plot, see the appeal and find comfort in the few successful matches that are made.

L ay in victuals and potable water. Put your cats in a cattery. Then, and only then, do I advise that you settle down to watch Love Is Blind. And this is because Love Is Blind the Netflix reality dating show in which participants communicate with each other only from isolated pods and decide to get engaged on the basis of conversation alone, then live together for a month before the actual wedding — an actual wedding — takes place is, basically, crack.
Or meth. You will decide to give it five minutes before bed one night and find yourself still on the sofa as the sun rises on another day. You will be bleary-eyed and shattered from all the shouting you have done, the emotional investment you have made, the WhatsApp messages you have typed to a specially formed group and the heartfelt contributions you have made to various internet forums on the subject. In many ways, it is the final blow to the final nail in the coffin of civilisation, and possibly humanity, as we know it.
It is, after all, a reality show that requires participants to communicate with each other only from isolated pods, decide to get engaged on the basis of conversation alone, then live together for a month before the actual wedding — an actual wedding — takes place. Could we exploit emotional frailties, profane the sacred, make the private and precious public and worthless and turn it into voyeuristic ratings-bait any more ruthlessly or efficiently?
But it is good in reality-TV terms. Which is to say, in exploiting emotional frailties, profaning the sacred, making the private and precious public and worthless and turning it into voyeuristic ratings-bait. It gets under your skin.

Good looks and whatever other aesthetic concerns are out of the equation; these relationships are based on the true connection of conversation. It does help, though, that everyone is good-looking. Things get less theoretical and more actual when, after only a week or so, several of the couples get engaged sight unseen, only meeting face to face after the first proposal, then embarking on a fraught month of cohabitation on the way to a quickie wedding. This is The Bachelor condensed and reshaped, a throwback to the old gimmick reality days of 20 years ago with a decidedly contemporary veneer of earnest, faux sociology.
In its clumsy, powerful way, Love Is Blind lays bare the artifice—or, at least, the uncertainty—at the heart of any long-term coupling. For a short, intense burst, anyway: I slept on Love Is Blind after watching the finale late last night, and now feel a bit less worked up about the show than I did in the bleary wee hours.

Hot on the heels of the surprisingly sweet The Circle , the Netflix algorithm has produced another bingeable reality show. This one is called Love Is Blind , which is hosted by a largely absent real-life celebrity couple—Nick and Vanessa Lachey, who fell in love face-to-face—and brings together a tried and true formula.
It sounds like a lofty social experiment, but, dear reader, it most certainly is not. Love Is Blind begins by dropping 30 young Atlanta singles into an elaborate blind dating facility set for ten days, at the end of which they must either get engaged to a fellow contestant or go home. The men and women live in separate quarters connected by a row of 15 pods, where they begin a rotation of 7-minute speed date sessions to get to know each other. Six couples 12 of the 30 participants make it to this stage of the game.
The couples get to meet in person once they are engaged, and after the anonymous Circle -esque portion of the show ends, the novelty of the concept mostly wears off although the show remains dreadfully watchable. From there, the engaged couples are whisked off to Mexico for a pre-wedding honeymoon in which they begin to cultivate their physical relationships they already have incredibly strong emotional bonds—you could never understand, having not experienced pod-dating yourself.
Trouble begins early on for some couples in paradise. One couple calls it quits with rings thrown into the pool! The pairs still standing—or teetering, rather—are soon after flown home to Atlanta to prepare for their weddings, which are to be held in three weeks time. The five remaining couples move in together and face integrating their real lives, student debt and all.
Unsurprisingly, more than one of these weddings end in disaster. Out of the gate, the question the show sets out to answer—if love is truly blind—feels like a second thought, at no fault of the cast themselves.
